Established in 2005, the Office of Sustainability’s mission is to advance sustainability within the Yale community by acting as a catalyst for information exchange and facilitating capacity building, innovation, streamlined operations, and preparation of tomorrow’s sustainability leaders.

Meet Our Staff

Amber Garrard
Director of Sustainability

Current Responsibilities: Amber is the Director of Sustainability for Yale University. In this role, she helps to set and advance sustainability priorities, acting as a liaison to university leadership, and representing Yale’s sustainability portfolio within the institution and externally. Amber chairs Yale’s Operations Sustainability & Resiliency Task Force as well as various committees on specialized topics related to sustainability and operational efficiency, facilitating cross-departmental collaboration to address complex issues. She serves as a bridge between operational initiatives, academic interests, and external partners.

Amber is a member of the Facilities Executive Leadership Team, advising on capital projects, framework planning, operational priorities, and change management strategies. She directs the Office of Sustainability, sets strategic priorities for that group, and leads critical decision-making processes.

Lindsay Crum
Associate Director

Current Responsibilities: Lindsay provides strategic direction for streamlined sustainability operations, and helps identify the economic, social and environmental benefits of the university’s sustainability projects and programs. She manages the annual greenhouse gas emissions inventory with The Climate Registry and works on scope 3 emissions efforts. Lindsay is actively involved in the Ivy Plus Sustainability Consortium and sustainable materials management initiatives.

Sarah Jane Compton
Senior Administrative Assistant

Current Responsibilities: Sarah Jane is the Senior Administrative Assistant of the Office of Sustainability. She provides comprehensive program support to the Office of Sustainability, including event management, procurement, and financial operations.

Maria Gutiérrez
Sustainability Engagement Manager

Current Responsibilities: Maria is responsible for leading efforts to increase visibility across the student population and advancing Yale’s sustainability goals. She collaborates with students and staff across Yale’s residential colleges and professional schools, supports student interest groups and campus partners, leads Spring Salvage, and contributes to the planning and management of events such as Celebrate Sustainability and Earth Day.

Academic/Professional Credentials and Appointments: Ph.D. in Egyptology, Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Andy Bromage
Sustainability Communications Officer

Current Responsibilities: Andy is responsible for leading strategic communications related to Yale’s sustainability goals. He manages the Office’s website, social media channels and e-newsletters; writes articles and explainers on sustainability-related topics; and co-coordinates two campus-wide events: Earth Week in April and Celebrate Sustainability Week in October.
