Yale Facilities likes a green campus. The leadership and staff are enthusiastically supporting two campus-wide programs to support the reuse of materials.

Declutter, Destress, Donate

The Declutter Destress Donate campaign was hosted by the Yale Office of Sustainability, February 25 - March 8, 2019 and encouraged members of the Yale community to lower stress levels by decluttering their space and donating unwanted items. Staff, faculty and students donated a whopping 2,262 pounds of stuff–making for a very successful program! A BIG THANKS goes out to all the Facilities superintendents and operations managers of the residential colleges for their hardwork and support of this program. This year’s campaign was the result of collaboration with on-campus partners, including the Good Life Center, Being Well at Yale, WorkLife, and the Slifka Center.

Spring Salvage

Yale’s second major on-campus waste diversion effort, Spring Salvage, will be held May 1-22, 2019. Spring Salvage alleviates the vast amounts of materials that are discarded during undergraduate student move-out at the end of each academic year. This annual program, which started in 2009, recovers nearly 50,000 pounds of donatable items each year. The Office of Sustainability works closely with Yale Facilities employees together insuring that undergraduate student move-out is as efficient as possible while limiting the environmental impact.

Materials management is an important part of the Yale Sustainability Plan 2025, and these two on-campus programs held annually during the spring semester are instrumental in helping Yale to reach its goals around reuse. All resuable items from both programs are donated to Goodwill Industries of Southern New England.
