Yale Printing and Publishing Services (YPPS) just got a little greener.
Last month YPPS received Chain-of-Custody certification from the Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®), which is a non-profit organization established to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. The certification came through the Rainforest Alliance™, which is accredited by the FSC and is today the world’s leading nonprofit FSC certifier.
The FSC Chain-of-Custody certification traces the path of products from forests through the supply chain, verifying that FSC-certified paper pulp is identified and kept separate from non-certified paper pulp.
While YPPS has offered and used FSC certified paper stocks for the past 6 years, they can now tout their support of FSC’s mission of responsible forest management with the FSC logo on finished print pieces. With an FSC brand, a printed piece has been monitored from the forest to the mills and from the printing press to the mailbox.
“Previously, the cost and process to become certified was so prohibitive that we didn’t pursue it. But recently with industry changes, it takes about ¼ of the time to apply at 1/8 of the price,” said Jeff Gworek, director of YPPS.
To receive certification, 45 of YPPS’s staff members had to be trained, including warehouse receivers, designers, QC managers and customer service reps. Then the entire operation was audited by an outside group. The chain-of-custody process begins when products are placed in the warehouse and tagged FSC appropriate. When an FSC job ticket is activated, staff members handle it accordingly.
“Basically, anyone whose hand touches a print job was trained and now understands how to acknowledge an FCS print piece when it comes through,” said Jason England, YPPS graphic designer and prepress specialist, who managed the certification project.
“We were pretty excited when the auditor expressed that our facility was the greenest and neatest he’d ever seen,” said Jeff Gworek. A month after the on-site audit, YPPS received a formal email stating their official certification. Yale is the only other Ivy League school besides Dartmouth to have this certification.
