Research Collaborative Coordinator
A joint-position between Princeton University and the Yale Office of Sustainability
Background:
The sustainability field has identified a significant disconnect between campus sustainability implementation and basic research that could inform decisions and implementation processes at the core of these endeavors. The Sustainable Research Collaborative (SRC), formed jointly by the Yale and Princeton offices of sustainability responds to this need by engaging undergraduate and graduate students in investigations leading to improved sustainability implementation within higher education. Research fellows recruited from participating Ivy League institutions will investigate key questions in a collaborative research environment with partner sustainability programs at Ivy+ institutions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary role of the coordinator, stationed at either Yale or Princeton, will be to engage with and guide the collaborative process across multiple institutions and with multiple student-led research teams.
- Organize a virtual orientation session/webinar at the start of summer
- Assess the level of support each research team needs
- Develop milestones and timelines catered to each research team’s needs, and take the lead scheduling meetings if necessary
- Assist research teams in early draft editing
- Organize a collective virtual symposium at the end of the summer
- Work closely with the directors of the Yale and Princeton Offices of Sustainability
- Apply collaborative technology where appropriate to maintain effective day-to-day working relationships across geographic distances, with in-person meeting scheduled when feasible
- Organize an end-of-summer virtual program conference where all participants will present their results
Desired Skills & Abilities
- Very strong self-starter and independent worker capable of collaborative team management
- Extremely capable with time management and organizational skills
- Strong writing and editorial skills in the academic publication arena
- Excellent communication skills

Graduate Research Fellow, Sustainability Research Collaborative
A joint-position between Princeton University and the Yale Office of Sustainability
Background:
The sustainability field has identified a significant disconnect between campus sustainability implementation and basic research that could inform decisions and implementation processes at the core of these endeavors.
The Sustainable Research Collaborative (SRC), formed jointly by the Yale and Princeton offices of sustainability responds to this need by engaging undergraduate and graduate students in investigations leading to improved sustainability implementation within higher education.
The Yale and Princeton Offices of Sustainability jointly seek to engage a summer graduate student research fellow to build on foundational research completed in the summer and fall of 2012.
Our particular interest is in identifying higher education sustainability performance patterns linked with bioregional environmental drivers. For example, we seek to determine whether water use reduction performance metrics reported by institutions in desert bioregions reflect the ecological needs or restrictions of the region. Other metrics of interest include greenhouse gas emissions, food procurement, and waste generation.
Duties and responsibilities:
The primary role of the fellow, stationed at either Yale or Princeton, will be to work closely with the two sustainability directors and conduct ongoing analysis of the STARS metrics database. Building on baseline analysis conducted in the summer of 2012, the 2013 fellow will update the database with new institutional entries and engage in deeper analysis of sustainability performance metrics across higher education.
- Organize regular update meetings with the two directors
- Conduct a high quality literature review, and efficiently summarize key findings
- Evaluate next steps in analysis
- Produce a written document that will serve as the foundation for publication
Desired Skills & Abilities:
- Very strong self-starter and independent worker capable of collaborative team work
- Strong ability to apply analytical skills, including statistical, to highly variable datasets
- Strong proficiency in Excel or similar spreadsheet and database manipulation
- Very capable with time management and organizational skills
- Demonstrable written and editorial skills in the academic publication arena
- Ability to focus on achievable research objectives
Applicant must be a currently matriculated grad student in good standing and must be willing to commit to the position June 1 – August 1, full-time, with no other work commitments. Some exceptions may be made if there are limited obligations elsewhere on campus. There is no expectation to extend the position beyond summer, but some flexibility in start and end date is possible.
Interested applicants should submit a résumé and brief cover letter to sarah.compton@yale.edu no later than April 12.
