January Tips: Heath & Well Being

Burn carbs, not carbon. Driving just one mile releases a pound of carbon into the air. Why not burn calories instead? Choose to walk to your meetings on campus. Save money (gas is expensive and parking is a pain!) and get a jump start on your New Year’s resolution to exercise more. Find out how much money and many calories you can save per trip:

Where’s the beef? Even if you’re not interested in becoming vegetarian, try meatless Mondays as a way to lower environmental impact and your risk of heart disease. If you arrange events on campus, consider a vegetarian menu – it will be delicious, healthy, and light on impact.

BYOC. Bringing your own container when you go to lunch will allow you to control your portions at “all you can eat” locales and will keep your ‘fridge neat if you have leftovers. It also keeps polystyrene (aka Styrofoam) out of the waste stream.

Say Bye Bye to the Bottle. According to "National Geographic," Americans drink more bottled water than any other nation, purchasing an impressive 29 billion bottles every year. Making all the plastic for those bottles uses 17 million barrels of crude oil annually.” (See source.) The longer water is contained in a plastic bottle, the more chance there is that chemicals from the plastic will leech into the water…. So tap water is probably better for you, the planet and the bottom line.

Go local with your low cal commitment. Are you kicking off a new healthy eating plan this year? Farmers’ markets are a great way to support your community while eating healthy! Visit cityseed.org to find winter markets that are stocked with local veggies produce, meats, veggies, and more all winter.
